This recipes is inspired by the crisp colors of the New England Autumn leaves. Using natural colorants and pouring the liquid soap batter into circular molds we can create our own colorful autumn leave set in a golden background as if our yellow and red leaves have dropped onto the sandy beach of a New England pond. Here, we’ll take you through the process of our version of the circle pipe divider technique using all natural colorants and fragrance. Autumn Leaves used to recreate the “On Golden Pond” Cold Process Natural Soap

Circular Divider Technique:

Cut two or three different size pvc pipes into 3 inch pieces and place them either randomly or in a pattern face up in a flat mold. A three lb. mold will give you a 9 bar cut with bars weighing about 5 5.5 oz. Per bar. To get at least on mold design per bar, be sure to arrange at least 9 circles in the mold.

Large flat 3 lb. slab mold with 3 inch pvc pipes at different sizes.

What you need:

  • Your Lye Water Solution
  • Your favorite cold process soap recipe. (We recommend using an oil combination that promotes a loose pour for easy swirling.) Get our recipe here.

Natural Colorants: (The following will give you fall autumn colors)

  • Paprika (Peachy Pink)
  • Beet Root (Yellow/Tan)
  • Matcha Tea (Green)
  • Turmeric (Yellow)
  • Moroccan Clay (Deep Red)
  • Coco Powder (Brown)
  • Ground Calendula, Dandelion, Chamomile Flower Petals


  • 0.5 oz. Eucalyptus Essential Oil


First prepare the colorants by placing a tbsp. of each colorant powder into 2 oz. of oil. Mix well and set this aside.

Gently pour the lye crystals into cold distilled water and stir until completely dissolved. Set this aside to cool.

The Circle Divider Technique

Place the circular pipe molds inside the flat slab mold as shown in the image.

Combine the oils in a large separate bowl. When the lye water has cooled to room temperature pour the lye water solution into the oil mixture and blend well with a stick blender. Ad the Eucalyptus essential oil and blend well.

The base of the soap is a swirled combination of uncolored soap and the sandy brown that is created when the ground flowers are added to the base. Pour 1/3 of the soap batter into a bowl. Pour 1/3 of the soap batter into a second bowl. Add 1 tbsp of ground flower petals and mix. Continue adding the ground flowers until you get the desired sandy color. Pour both bowls of soap into the mold alternating between the brown and non-colored (white). Make sure you are pouring this on the outside of the circles.

Separate the remaining soap into 6 cups and add each colorant into a separate cup. Start with just a teaspoon of oil until you achieve the desired result. You will not be using the entire 2 oz. of oil of each color. This is entirely too much. Only add a little at a time until you achieve the desired color. Pour each color into a mold, blend the colors as morphed changing leaves appear to you. Once the remaining batter is poured, gently remove the circle molds by pulling them straight upward.

Turn your circles into leaves by drawing a skewer through the center of each circle turning every circle color into a heart/leaf shape.

Allow this to set up for 18-24 hours and cut into 9 pieces. The leaf design will now be seen through the entire bar. Set these aside to cure for 4 to 6 weeks.

    Great job on the blog post. I had a lot of fun doing this project. Some people used skerwers, others used wooden spoon handles – which I found to be too big for my project, I used a batter beater handle as my skewer because it moved the soap better to make more realistically shaped leaves.
